If there is any single act that is immediately identified with zydeco music today, it’d have to be Buckwheat Zydeco. Celebrating their 30th year of creating exciting music and taking to stages around the country and around the world, leader Stanley “Buckwheat” Dural, Jr. still knows how to get a party started and rolling all night long.
Though the band has been together for 30 years, Dural’s career far exceeds that, stretching all the way back to the late 1950s when he worked behind such legends as Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Joe Tex and Clifton Chenier. The band has released numerous recordings on labels such as Rounder, Black Top, Island, Tomorrow and most recently with the Alligator label, including their latest, Lay Your Burden Down. Firmly based in zydeco tradition, the song selections of Buckwheat Zydeco have always strayed into various genres and it’s not unusual to hear the band play selections from The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Gov’t Mule and even Memphis Minnie.
Buckwheat Zydeco will be returning to Portland for a special night at Mississippi Studios (3939 N Mississippi Ave.) on Thursday, September 17th, for a 8:00 pm show. Tickets are $18. Prepare to spend the night dancing if you go. There is just no preventing yourself from doing so when Buckwheat Zydeco is in the house. Get your tickets early; this one is certain to be a full house!!
