Cascade Blues
The City of Roses is also the City of the Blues... Portland, Oregon is widely recognized for its vibrant blues scene. Here are a few ways you can learn more about our local blues community.
The Cascade Blues Association is the Proud Recipient of the Blues Foundation’s “Keeping The Blues Alive” Award for 2003!
This award is presented to the blues society that has been the most active in the past year through its newsletter, educational efforts and community outreach programs. It's the highest attainable honor for non-performers in the blues industry, created to recognize the behind-the-scenes professionals and fans who keep the Blues thriving and forging ahead.

"Truly An Original Bluesman!"
Article Reprint from the January, 2002 BluesNotes
By Ken Condit, Secretary, CBA Board of Directors
Singer, Mel Solomon, first traveled to Portland in 1971 to visit his mother, whom he hadn't seen in over 10 years. He had planned to hang out for only a couple of weeks, but that first brief visit has now turned into a 30-year stay and hopefully will last for years to come. Having previously taken up residence in Dallas, Chicago and Los Angeles, the Louisiana native wound up finding a home in Portland and eventually establishing his reputation here as a talented and unadulterated Bluesman.

"Living Life to its Fullest"
Gary Small is certainly one of the more talented and creative Bluesmen on the local scene today! He is a veteran musician that can sing, play and write music with a passion and punch that makes one sit up and take notice. He plays Blues and Blues-related material, sometimes "out of the box", leaving himself and his audience room to breathe. He has recently finished his new CD titled. "Wild Indians", in which he gives tribute to his Indian culture and ancestry.

Boyd Small has been an integral part of the Portland Blues scene for a long time. He's known around town as one of the "best" drummers as well as one of the "finest" vocalists local Blues has to offer. He is certainly a "special" talent, well schooled in his endeavor. That schooling has come via some formal education, but more evident is his self taught lessons through his vast experiences in his chosen music career.
