The Hudson Rocket Band - Nov '09

Greetings Rocketeers!
Some of you have wondered why there hasn’t been anything in the BluesNotes about The HRB for awhile. Well, the road to “now” has had many turns. (The loss of our last founding member, the passing of Vince, and so many personnel changes.) Fortunately, that old road led us to a great place with Cordless Cliff, Mickie Will, Gaddis Cavenah, & James Ruby at the helm. The Rocket is flying stronger than ever! Our newest CD “No Cover” is selling well and has met with fantastic reviews. (You can hear it on KMHD!) The band is writing its own material, and the CD reflects this change of direction. Blues By The Sea was a great show this year and The Hudson’s set was stellar. Many thanks to all that attended and to all those wonderful people that made it happen. It was there that we ran into Hudson, (haven’t heard from him since that incident with the taxi at Trail’s End,) and he was ecstatic about the new and improved Hudson Rocket. He really liked all the new tunes. He said it’s the direction he always had in mind for the band. It was sure good seeing him after all this time, although he didn’t stick around long. Something about Randy Oxford and Billy Stoops taking him for drinks and dinner. Knowing Hudson, we hope their credit cards were paid up!
Come catch the November show at Scottie’s Imbibery in McMinnville on the 21st . We’re looking forward to, as Cordless would say, “too much fun!”

Hello Everyone!
I must start out by saying the big news of the month for me has been getting XM 74 radio play on BB Kings Bluesville! What an honor. The shocking thing is the tune Bill Wax chose to play was one I never thought any blues station would touch. It’s our country tinged tune “I’ll Ask The Questions, You Tell the Lies!” He is also spinning “Love Makes Change.” Now, that one I understand, but the other one? Go figure! Ya just never know in this business what floats peoples boats! So you can believe I’ll be watching those blues and roots charts in the coming weeks.
Beyond that, October was a fairly decent month with some good gigs which included a benefit to help get Son Jack, Jr. to Memphis! What a stellar night at The Rockfish in Anacortes, WA! And then, getting to sit back and watch all the bands play was amazing.
November is looking slim for gigs due to the holidays but December picks up again for gigs in Washington and a couple in Oregon which include an interview with Jane Martin Manning on KMHD in Portland. So tune in for that one if you are so inclined. It will be Friday, December 11th, around 6pm, and then we hit the Trails End that same night. So please come down and say hello!  In the meantime, have a great month and keep on bluesin’!

Kevin Selfe and The Tornadoes - Sep 09

Hi everybody!  We hope you have had a fun and eventful summer.  The band and I have been busy playing gigs and putting the finishing touches on our CD “Playing The Game”.  It the midst of all this, Allen found time to get married to Lisa in front of a few friends (well...maybe thirty thousand or so!) on stage at the Waterfront Blues Festival....what a beautiful ceremony!
As for our CD “Playing The Game”, the recording consists of 10 original songs that cover a wide range of blues that we hope you will enjoy.  We are excited to announce that we will be having our CD release party on Friday, October 2 at Duff’s Garage located at 1635 SE 7th Ave in Portland.  The show starts at 9:30pm and the cost is $8.   This is a Cascade Blues Association co-sponsored event and members will receive $1 off the cover charge if they present their membership card at the door.
In other news, our Sunday night jam at the Refectory has been going great!  We are well into our 2nd year there and it’s seems to get better each week.  Thanks to all those who have been coming out and supporting the jam, especially all the wonderful musicians who have shared their talents with us.   For those who haven’t made it out yet, the Refectory is located at 1618 NE 122nd Ave., just north of Halsey.  It starts at 6pm (great for those of you who have to get up early!) and goes until around 10 or 10:30.  There is a nice big dance floor and the Refectory always has some great food and drink specials going on during the jam.

The Dover Weinberg Quartet - Sep 09

Now working on their 10th year of Tuesday night musical gathering, the Dover Weinberg Quartet  at Duff’s Garage is fast becoming a habit for musicians and fans, alike.  KMHD’s Blues Palace host, Tom Addis, has said that this is probably the best unknown band in the area. While the music is blues centered, it can run from blues to bop to country. No two Tuesdays will be the same, except for the fact that these guys obviously enjoy what they are doing, along with the many guests invited to sit in.
The DWQ consists of Dover Weinberg on keys, Chris Carlson on guitar, Jimi Bott on drums, and Dave Kahl on bass. Vocal duties are passed around and give a brilliant variety to the night, especially when coupled with instrumentals that range from T-Bone Walker to Charlie Parker or Jimmy McGriff.  While Chris is in San Francisco with his wife, Duffy Bishop, for the next few months, filling in for him will be Alan Hager, a consummate guitarist and vocalist who has covered the spot on numerous occasions. Chris will make the trek back home periodically, but in either case the spot is solidly covered.
Music runs from 9pm to midnight (or later). Cover is $2. Duff’s Garage is located on S.E. 7th Avenue, at the corner of S.E. Market Street. Bring your party, bring yourself, but certainly be prepared to have a great time with a lot of your friends. Tuesdays at Duff’s Garage with the Dover Weinberg Quartet will feel like a party in your living room without having to clean up afterward. Oh yeah, your living room probably doesn’t have a full service bar in it.
